You do have to be mindful of the number of watts you pull from the unit if you want the battery to last. It's easy to know how many watts you're drawing because the unit tells you on it's digital display. Good thing you can charge the XPower from a car cigarette lighter. During my adventure in Wilma's wake, I would have used the XPower by night and charged it in the car while driving during the day. The digital display also shows the percentage of charge left in the battery.

The best thing to have during a prolonged power outage is a gas generator. But generators require periodic maintenance. And you have to store fresh gas and remember to change the gas periodically. With this unit you just find an out-of-the-way corner, plug in the AC charger and forget all about it until you need it.

The XPower has a big 28 amp-hour battery which is good for capacity, but makes the unit heavy, almost 30 pounds, so you won't want to carry it very far. Xantrex makes smaller units, but I think the 600 is the best compromise between capacity and portability. The XPower's construction is robust and it looks like it could take some hard knocks.

I pretty much agree with Rex Kullmans' review,
but i have a few things to mention.

While i think that removing the compressor
and adding a radio, was a good move for the
600 W unit, the clock radio itself does
not have lightable controls & station
indicator, to turn on/off.

Also, while i don't mind that the sound
quality isn't all that great from the
speaker, i really think that they should
have included a headphone jack, as to me,
as a 'power outage survival tool', i would
like to listen to the radio, without
disturbing anyone else who may be sleeping.

And a third point: That LOW BATT Alarm...is
extremely LOUD. And in certain circumstances,
i can see why this would be a good thng. But
since the unit will shut down automatically,
10 minutes later, i think that it would be
a much better unit, if the alarm volume were
controllable, or at least, that it could be
turned off, so as not to jar people awake,
who are using it to run something overnight,
like a fan, or mini TV.

Hopefully they will correct these things on
future models. I will continue to use
my pocket radio instead of the one on the
600HD, and consider the non-use of the radio,
as just more power to run my little 7" Holmes
Clip Fan, while the power is off, or
more power for my little 9" TV.

I've got a 300W, a 400W and now a 600W unit, that
can get me through a few hours power outage.
(Depending on how many things i try to run
with them) I am looking at getting the 1500W
unit to run my fridge for a 4 or 5 hour
outage, which means i could keep my food
good for up to 6 or so hrs, on battery packs
alone too. But i am concerned with all the
reports of 1500W units arriving in damaged
conditions. Perhaps if there is news that
they've solved the problems regarding the
1500W units it'll be back on my wish list.

I know someone who has one to run a piece of
medical equipment that he *needs* to be able
to breathe while sleeping, and he uses Xantrex
units as his "electrical lifeline" during
power outages. He used his car to recharge
his units during an ice storm outage...
It was a pain to run them out to the car
to charge them back up, but at least he
was able to survive without having to go
to a Red Cross Shelter, or be evacuated.

I've read of a person who described how
he had hooked his 1500W unit up to a
second battery, (a 100 Amp hr battery),
and said that he was able to stay
"powered up" for "several days". Now
i've read in the instruction manuals
that this could be done, but the Xantrex
manuals aren't really all that helpful
if decribing how to do this, and if,
when the power comes back on, will the
inverter recharge the second battery as
well? I would think that Xantrex would
not only want their customers to know
how to easily "build" a "battery bank",
to extend the power availiable to them,
but want to sell them the equipment to do
so.

To sum up. The Xantrex units i've had,
have held me in good stead, but they
really aren't for more than basic small
power usages, for matters of hours, rather
than days. If you're looking for something
that will give you more than "eke-ing by"
power, for a few hours, or an "overnight"
power outage...get a generator.

My Recommendation:(the one i'd buy if i
could afford it: the Yamaha 2800(I) W

Does a reasonable job. We actually bought the power source to run our 12V camping fridge and lights both when camping, and on road trips when the car is switched off. It should have a heavier duty charger so that you can leave your 12V devices plugged in when you plug it into the mains to charge (doing that will apparently overload / burn the charger out). I have no faith in the digital readout - it ran my camping fridge for a couple of hours. After shutting it off for a couple of hours it claimed to have 0% charge left, then after that it continued to run the fridge overnight without the battery dropping low enough for the fridge's automatic low battery cut out.

For what it is though (an emergency battery / power source), it seems to do quite an adequate job.

I haven't had reason to try the car jump start feature, so I don't know if the battery can really provide enough CCA to do that. I do question however, that it would jump the car safely now when all computer managed engines are supposed to only be jumped with surge protected jumper leads. On the first of these units I ordered, the display for the clock/radio unit didn't work. I returned it and Amazon sent me another one. On the second unit I received, the power meter was broken. I am currently waiting for my third unit to arrive.

There are a three features in particular that I find very useful.

First, it's charging system is literally plug-in and forget. It maintains a full charge at all times and you do not need disconnect it from AC power ever. It's circuits determine the need for charging if and when required. It's always ready for use whenever you need it

Second, it has a built-in meter that tells you the state of charge(as a percentage) while using it. Think of it as a fuel gauge.

I have loved these power packs for years, and every time they have come out with a bigger one I was the first to buy it. but this one was a slight disappointment only because it does not have the air pump. Every one I have purchased in the past had one, and believe me they have come in handy. I bought this to plug into my cigarette lighter and leave in place most of the time to power a laptop, rechargeable instruments, tools, etc. Even though it is sold as an inverter, the manual says not to use it while it is plugged into the lighter. I still leave it plugged in, and it works fine with my laptop, but the charger for one of the rechargeable instruments I leave plugged into it usually gives an indication that something funny is going on. The radio on it has a speaker the size of a nickel. That was disappointing, but if WW III starts while I am at work, it could be handy for receiving informational broadcasts. For my application, I probably should have bought a pure sine wave inverter, but I gambled on this. I am sure it will be handy at times, and I think there are applications where it would be perfect, but if you want to recharge electronics, drills, etc., I would get a pure sine wave inverter. The XPower 600HD digital display will show me power consumption in watts when AC appliances are being run from the outlets, but it has never shown me the battery charge level percentage as described in the manual. So I would describe the display functionality as "half broken".

The run time I'm getting from the AC outlets is pretty dismal. My 50-watt incandescent light bulb should have run for 5 to 6 hours but lasted only 2.5 hours before the XPower 600HD buzzer sounded indicating low battery voltage. I shut it down for 30-minutes then got an additional 15-minutes of power for my 50-watt light bulb before it started buzzing again.

I fully charged the unit for two days before I ran my test. I then ran the same test three or four times with at least 24-hours of charging before each test.

Sure the XPower 600HD pretty much does what it's supposed to but it doesn't even come close to meeting the specs set forth in the Owner's Guide. Running a 50-watt bulb for only 2.5 hours is unacceptable. A digital display that is "half broken" is unacceptable.

Be sure to test yours. You might be disappointed.

Before I even attempted to charge the unit, I removed one of the plastic covers on a plugin to inspect the plugin. To my amazement, the unit--THIS IS BEFORE CHARGING, REMEMBER--sparked, crackled and smoked. Hoping that this hadn't permanently damaged my purchase, I charged the unit for a couple of days, following the instructions to the letter. The charge light came on--alternately blinking and continuous for various periods of time--and I thought I was OK, despite the fact that the %-charged indicator didn't work.

When the unit had been charged for the required time, I tried it out by plugging in my coffee pot to brew a pot using power from the Xantrex. Nothing. No power. No coffee. I tried all of the plugins. The ALARM, however--which is supposed to come on when the unit is low on charge--DID come on. I unplugged the coffee pot and turned the unit off. The alarm STAYED ON. It continued to sound whether the unit was in the off position or in the on. It's still sounding two weeks later from its home in the dumpster (the trash company guy was spooked and wouldn't haul it away--I'll probably have to pay someone who sells batteries to dispose of it properly). This unit does exactly what it promises- a recent storm caused us to lose power overnight- We plugged a window box fan in the unit and it ran about 7 hours- it was a lifesaver- allowing us to sleep comfortably that night. I've been camping for years and decided to "modernize" my equiptment last year. This unit delievers exactly what it says it does and I am exceptionally happy with it's operation. It was used it to recharge the cell phone, to run a portable dvd player and various other tasks. I read the other feedback before purchasing this 600 watts. Therefore I was not surprised when my powerpack arrived and didn't work properly. Specifically: the radio was always on draining the battery :( Amazon was GREAT at handling the pick-up and sending out a new unit (5 stars to Amazon!) I ONLY want a power SOURCE. I do NOT want a light, radio, clock, compressor or anything that uses power besides what I plug into it. These other features have a LOT of problems. I don't understand why they include broken junk that causes MANY expensive returns. Now the battery capacity readout is incorrect. However I'm not going to return it since the actual unit works and the radio is not always on. The reason I purchased it was the PRICE: $110 shipped. NONE of the Xantrex PowerPacks provide the amount of battery life stated in their descriptions. That said, they still have the best product out there for the money. Since they are VERY portable, idiot proof and safe, I am comfortable letting kids and the elderly use them. Outside, inside, apartments, condos, schools, street fairs, craft shows, you name it and I've used it there. I can jump cars OR keep lights, fan, water pump or fridg running during power outages, AND use plug-in electrical items ANYWHERE I want to - all for the price of some spoiled meat. Until someone else makes a better, less expensive PowerPack, I will continue to buy Xantrex. I understand the need for a LOUD low battery buzzer when the unit is in a basement or other location far from view. Once I get there, I just wish there was a way to turn off the buzzer so I can conserve power AND still use it to the bitter end without bugging my neighbor (its that loud). Then I switch to another PowerPack. The 600 has a LOT more plastic protecting the unit - more than either of my other units. Its much more rugged so I'm glad they learned (hopefully they'll read this feedback and make an even better model ;) And the handle is easier to hold. Its heavy, but if you don't want to carry it, just get a little suitcase cart or throw it in an old rolling suitcase (CHEAP at garage sales, KMart, etc). Voila, not so heavy ;) SO, if you're looking for a safe, cheap source of power, this is the one for you.
